The French Toast I've Seen All Over Instagram, Finally Tasted!

There's something about weekend afternoons that makes you crave a special dessert. A friend kept recommending a French toast place in Yeonnam-dong, so I finally dragged myself out. Honestly, I wondered what could be so special about French toast... but to cut to the chase, I was completely wrong, haha.

The Journey and First Impressions

It's about a 10-minute walk from Hongik University Station Exit 3. If you walk along the Gyeongui Line Forest Road, you'll see a bustling spot among the residential areas, and that's it! It's located underground, so it felt a bit unfamiliar at first, but once I went down the stairs, the cozy atmosphere was very appealing.

Be Prepared for a Wait

I arrived around 1 PM on a Saturday, and as expected, there was a wait. There were about four groups ahead, so I waited for about 30 minutes. They don't use apps like CatchTable; instead, you write your name manually, and they call you. While waiting, exploring the alleys of Yeonnam-dong is quite fun.

A Store with a Great Atmosphere

The store is larger than expected! There are bar tables and regular tables in the main building, and there's an annex through a hallway, so there are quite a few seats. If you sit at the bar table, you can watch the French toast being made right in front of you, which is entertaining. It feels like watching an omakase?

The Time of Order and Waiting

Of course, you have to order the French toast! For drinks, we ordered milk tea and iced Americano. It takes about 15 minutes for the French toast after ordering, but watching the making process at the bar table made time fly by. Watching them grill with butter, bake in the oven, and torch sugar at the end was truly an art.

The French Toast of a Lifetime Finally Arrives

The drinks came out first, followed by the French toast... Wow, this is what real French toast is like. The outside is crispy like a sugar brûlée, and the inside is incredibly soft. It comes with maple syrup and Maldon salt, and at first, I wondered why salt? But after tasting it, the sweet and salty combination was fantastic!

The Truth of Taste in One Bite

The moment you dip it in syrup and touch it with salt... it was truly shocking. It's a completely different level from the French toast I made at home. The outside is crispy, the inside is moist, and the sweet and salty flavors balance perfectly, so it never gets overwhelming. I understand now why people come even if they have to wait.

The Drinks Are Delicious Too

The milk tea has a genuinely authentic taste. It's sweet yet clean, and it pairs perfectly with the French toast. The iced Americano has a stronger nutty aroma than acidity, creating a perfect balance when enjoying dessert.

There are many cafes in the Yeonnam-dong area around Joan Dawson, making it fun to explore. The Gyeongui Line Forest Road is nearby, perfect for a walk, and Yeontral Park and Mangwon Hangang Park are also close, ideal for a stroll after dessert.

Honest Overall Review

The waiting time is a bit disappointing, but it's definitely worth the wait. If you love French toast, you should visit at least once. I think I'll be back again. Just be prepared for the wait!
