A Hidden Gem in Hongdae! Authentic Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki at Hoyo

Oh, you know that okonomiyaki place that keeps popping up on Instagram these days? My friend kept insisting we go, and I was half-skeptical, thinking 'Is this another hyped restaurant?' But... it was truly amazingใ ใ
It's less than a 10-minute walk from Hongik University Station Exit 9. When I got there, it was a bit off the main street, so I wondered, 'Is this the right place?' But I recognized it right away from the sign!
The Atmosphere is Pure Izakaya
As soon as I walked in, the vibe was completely different. It felt like I was in a real Japanese izakaya! With the open kitchen, you can see the cooking process, and the sizzling sound from the teppan was already making my mouth waterใ ใ
Sitting at the counter is super fun because you can watch the cooking process right in front of you! It's not awkward to sit alone, and it seems great for couples or friends too.
The Taste Justifies the Wait
Looking at the menu, Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is their signature dish. It was my first time trying it, so I was curious, and wow... it's completely different from the Osaka style!
Even the basic appetizer of chilled tofu was delicious. The sesame dressing and bonito flakes on top made it feel really upscale. It paired so well with the highball that it went down smoothlyใ ใ
The True Charm of Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki
It's finally here! Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki! The visual was completely different. The layered style makes it super thick, and with the soba noodles inside, it's really filling.
From the first bite, I thought, 'Ah, this is it!' Unlike the Osaka style, it doesn't have a lot of flour, so it's not heavy, and each ingredient's flavor stands out. You can feel the crunchiness of the cabbage and the texture of the soba noodles is just perfect!
Donpeiyaki is Also a Winner!
My friend suggested we try the donpeiyaki, so we ordered it together, and it was truly a stroke of genius. It's like an omelet filled with pork and cabbage, giving it a really luxurious feel!
We also ordered yakisoba, and the fried egg came out half-cooked, so when we broke it and mixed it in, it was absolutely deliciousใ ใ The seasoning was just right, not too salty, so we enjoyed it till the last bite.
A Perfect Place for Value
The prices are more reasonable than expected! The Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is 17,000 won, and considering the portion, it's a steal. We ordered one okonomiyaki, one donpeiyaki, and one yakisoba for the two of us and were completely full.
There are so many types of highballs too. Green grape, peach, lemon, etc... They even have a 3+1 event, which was greatใ ใ
Top-notch Service from the Staff
While eating, they even gave us vegetable tempura as a service! They brought it over saying, 'We just made this, how is it?' and it was absolutely delicious. I really appreciated that attention to detail.
The staff were so friendly, and it wouldn't be awkward at all to come alone. I understood why it was almost full even on a Monday!
100% Intention to Revisit!
It feels like I've discovered a truly worthy restaurant after a long time. Next time, I want to try the Kyoto-style okonomiyaki and I'm curious about the sirloin steak too!
